The sedans were completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, and the 3 series lineup is now in its sixth generation. the 2014 bmw 3 series gran turismo is larger and roomier than the previous-generation version and is available in all-wheel-drive bmw 328i xdrive and bmw 335i xdrive variants. The diesel-powered bmw 328d sedan comes with the standard rear-wheel drive or xdrive all-wheel drive. All bmw 328d sports wagons come with xdrive all-wheel drive. as is typical with diesel power, fuel economy is admirable in the bmw 328d sedan and wagon. Rear-wheel-drive 328d sedans are epa-rated 32/45 mpg city/highway, and the 328d xdrive sedan and wagon are rated 31/43 mpg city/highway. also new for 2014 is bmw assist ecall, an emergency crash notification system, as standard equipment on all its 3 series models, along with 10 years of service. Previously, the ecall services were only available when bundled with certain optional packages. the 3 series coupe and convertible have been discontinued for 2014, and are replaced by the all-new bmw 4 series. A new high-performance m3 is scheduled to reappear later for 2014, after taking a hiatus for one model year. The 2014 bmw 320i earns an epa-estimated 23/36 mpg city/highway with the 6-speed manual transmission and 24/36 mpg city/highway with the automatic. All-wheel-drive bmw 320i xdrive models are automatic-only and achieve 23/35 mpg city/highway. This version accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5. 9 seconds with 8-speed automatic or in just 5. 7 seconds with 6-speed manual. The same feat takes the audi a4 2. 0t 6. 5 seconds. Signature design cues include the twin kidney grille, stretched back, slightly wraparound headlamps with double-bezel lamps, short front and rear overhangs and a uniquely shaped side rear window with a distinctive curve in the bodywork known as the hofmeister kink. sedans are available in luxury, sport and m sport trims. Each has unique exterior trim. Luxury line uses chrome kidney grille bars, a chrome exhaust pipe trim and a multi-spoke wheel design. From the side, it looks boxy, although the gentle curving slope from the top of the roof to the rear bumper softens an otherwise squarish appearance. Like the sedans, the sports wagon is available with luxury, sport and m sport trims. the new gran turismo bears the least resemblance to the rest of the 3 series lineup. Based on the long-wheelbase 3 series architecture developed for the chinese market, it's 7. 9 inches longer than the 3 series sports wagon with a 4. 3-inch longer wheelbase. It's also 3. 2 inches taller. Not quite a wagon and not really a crossover vehicle, the gt looks big and tall. The gaping maw and fastback silhouette from many angles looks more like a mini version of the 5 series gt than its 3 series relatives. In back, bmw's first active rear spoiler sits atop the gt's shelfy behind, which reduces lift at highway speeds. interiorthe standard interior looks like traditional bmw. The bmw 6 series models are based on rear-wheel drive, and xdrive all-wheel drive is available for bmw 640i and bmw 650i models. this third-generation 6 series began with bmw 640i and 650i coupes and convertibles, which launched as 2012 models. Gran coupes, m6 models, and xdrive versions followed for 2013. We found this to be true of all three body styles, all three engines, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. They deliver exceptional performance and handling. Chassis balance is excellent, the car responds as expected, feeling in every situation as if it is on the driver's side. Drive one of these cars too fast into a corner and it does not get flustered. driving the three body styles revealed more similarities than differences among them. Gran coupes are the best for rear-seat passengers, coupes are the sportiest, convertibles offer top-down motoring. We found the bmw 640i models deliver plenty of power and are relatively agile due to their lighter weight. Bmw 650i models deliver more power and are more responsive at all engine speeds. M6 versions feature raceworthy performance yet suffer surprisingly little in terms of comfort. bmw 640i convertible, 640i coupe, and 640i gran coupe come with a turbocharged 3. 0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. We found the bmw 640i engine brilliant, silky and fast-revving. Its inline-6 uses direct injection and variable valve timing to generate 315 horsepower and 330 foot-pounds of torque from 1400 to 4500 rpm. Bmw claims the bmw 640i coupe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5. 4 seconds. The 2014 bmw 640i convertible and convertible are rated at 20/30 miles per gallon city/highway by the environmental protection agency, as is the 2014 bmw 640i gran coupe. Optional adaptive led headlights have led light rings for the parking lights and flattened daytime running lights with horizontal led ribs. A gaping intake runs horizontally across the front like the mouth of a shark. at the rear are led taillight clusters. The bmw logo on the rear is in fact a small door that opens to let the rearview camera peer out when in reverse, a nice feature because it keeps the lens from getting dirty. The standard black soft top looks best on black cars. The top can be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 25 mph. It takes 19 seconds to open, 24 seconds to close. According to bmw, the 428i can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5. 7 seconds with either transmission on rwd models, or just 5. 6 seconds with all-wheel drive. as with many new vehicles, the automatic transmission used on the 4 series surpasses the manual gearbox when it comes to efficiency. Fuel economy estimates for the bmw 428i are an epa-estimated 22/34 mpg city/highway with the 6-speed manual, 23/35 mpg city/highway with the automatic on rwd models. Fuel economy for bmw 428i xdrive dips slightly to 22/33 mpg city/highway with its awd and automatic. most powerful is the bmw 435i, with a turbocharged 3. 0-liter inline-6 that makes 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, two horses more powerful but five pound-feet less than the 335i. Transmission choices are the same 6-speed manual or 8-speed auto. Not only is bmw's 8-speed automatic more efficient; it's also quicker. A bmw 435i equipped with the auto achieves a quick 0-60 mph time of 5 seconds flat. There was talk of a 450-hp twin-turbocharged inline-6 and body panels made of lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber. for 2014, bmw is including its emergency crash notification system, bmw assist ecall, on all its models, along with 10 years of service. interior materials in the 2014 bmw 4 series are similar to those found on the 3 series, though the 4 series cabin design is clearly more driver-oriented. All-wheel drive can improve handling stability on slippery surfaces. walkaroundthe styling of the bmw 4 series is more evolutionary than revolutionary, and is clearly recognizable as a 3 series coupe successor. like other bmw models, the 4 series comes in a choice of lines: standard, luxury, sport and m sport. Each gets unique exterior trim, interior trim and wheels. bmw 4 series coupes are wider and sit lower than the 3 series sedans, giving them a bolder, more aggressive stance. The front fascia closely resembles the latest 3 series, but it is not identical. Viewed from straight on, the coupe has a more flowing, aerodynamic appearance. The signature bmw twin kidney grille is ever-so-slightly lower and wider, flowing into headlamp housings that stretch back and wrap around into the front fender. Double-bezel headlamps are ringed and more pronounced, giving it that bmw angel eyes look. Foglamp housings are swoopier and a bit more accentuated. from the side, the silhouette is lower and sleeker, with a curvier, sharper sloping roofline. Short front overhangs leave very little weight hanging over the front axle. A distinctive body crease runs from behind the front wheel, through the door handle, and tapers off over the rear wheel. Side windows are shorter and more stretched back, and a sharper version of bmw's distinctive curve, known as the hofmeister kink, forms the tail end of the side rear windows. also setting the 4 series apart is the side air breather, a vertical vent located on each side behind the front wheel arch that channels air from the engine compartment down the sides of the car for reduced drag. standard wheels on the 428i are 17-inch alloys, while 435i models get 18-inch wheels. Designs vary depending on trim line. in the rear, the shorter back window is evident. Tail lamps look like slightly flattened versions of those found on the 3 series. The rear bumper is more horizontal and uses straight, rather than upwardly curved lines out to the rear fenders. Double exhaust tips remain together on the left side; we would have loved to see one pipe on each side, perhaps integrated into the rear bumper. interiorthe interior design of the 2014 bmw 4 series is clearly more driver-oriented than that of the 3 series. The center stack is slightly canted to the left, and a high, tapered dividing line just to the right of the gearshift cordons off the driver in her own little cocoon. Behind the shifter (and just below the center stack) is a shallow storage tray, which lifts out to reveal two standard-sized cupholders. We think this is an awkward design, since there is no designated place for the tray to go when the cupholders are being used. Up top is the idrive screen, with two air vents below.
